Egypt Wins the Pitch For Hosting Fab 15

Fab labs, the ever-evolving inventories of digital fabrication tools, is a global network of local Fab Labs with core capabilities that allow people to make (almost) anything. They’re available as community resources, where “makers” have an open access to make, and share, their awesome projects.

Such a global network comes together every year, where international leaders in the fields of science and technology, major international manufacturing companies and members of the more than 1,200 worldwide Fabs Labs gather  to share, discuss, collaborate and create communities around the different local and global interests regarding digital manufacturing, innovation, and technology.

And on the 5th of August, 2017, Egypt (represented by Fab Lab Egypt and Fab Lab New Cairo) has won  the Fab’13th pitch in Chile, against Canada, UAE, and China, to host the international conference Fab’15 in 2019. The event has been running for 14 years, hosted previously in South Africa, USA, India, Holland, Peru, New Zealand, Japan, China, Chile, and this year (2018) in France.

On July 20th of 2018, the torch was officially passed onto Egypt’s Fab’15 team from France’s Fab’14 team. Dina Al-Zanfaly, co-founder of Fab Lab Egypt, lead the teams of Fab Lab Egypt and Fab Lab New Cairo in giving a sneak peak to what’s being cooked for the Fab’15 conference.

The Maker Movement in Egypt has been jump-started in 2012 at the hands of Fab Lab Egypt, a member of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Fab Lab global network. It was founded by young Egyptian entrepreneurs, as a call for everyone who wanted to share their innovations and creations, and for those who wanted get inspired by such living stories. Ever since then, our community has grown to embrace thousands makers in tens of fields, covering ages from 6 to 99, and engaging engineers, artists, hobbyists, scientists and entrepreneurs.
